Every time I launch SteamVR, it says 'Compositor not available' and then shortly after, it says 'SteamVR has failed to initiate for unknown reasons. I’ve been looking for a solution to this for months, and most people state that you can go into the plugins within Unreal Engine and disable Steam/Oculus VR, but this does not work as the SteamVR compositor starts up BEFORE loading Unreal Engine, and furthermore, it only saves that setting on the specific project you are working on. There used to be a setting called 'start steamvr when an application starts.' For some reason, this option was removed, and is on by default I run Elite Dangerous in VR, and occasionally I wish to run it without VR. I also welcoming conversation about VR, and games that may or may not be on steam. I am not sure if this actually has anything to do with the recent update or not, but this issue just starting showing up today. Ive googled the out of this, and all threads are from older versions of SteamVR. It seems to run smoother, suggesting it is actually using the dGPU as opposed to without the launch option, but it still opens VRCompositor on the monitor rather than the Valve Index. Every time I launch SteamVR, it says 'Compositor not available' and then shortly after, it says 'SteamVR has failed to initiate for unknown reasons. I know this may not help the OP, or anyone who has commented thus far, but perhaps others who run into the same problem like we have.ītw shoot me a PM(+)Friend request if any of you play Hordez, Hover junkers, Airspace, or any of the other MMOs currently out for vive :) I have found I can get SteamVR using video memory (monitoring via radeontop -b 3) using DRIPRIME1 command in Launch Options. Run 'SteamVR' Distribution: Arch SteamVR version: 1.21.8 Steam client version: 1644454953 Opted into Steam client beta: Yes Graphics driver version: Mesa 21.3. I am not sure if this actually has anything to do with the recent update or not, but this issue just starting showing up today. I will add, I experienced the same problem with mine, and it happened a few times, first time I tried fudging it with a laptop that used a gtx 960 (desktop card ver), which is insufficient power lol, but the second time I experienced it was on my current rig with a 1070 in it, the issue for me was resolved by tweaking display settings in my PC and doing a few power cycles, as well as reinstalling steamVR and Vives own software for it. Ideally your Vive should be plugged into HDMI, I'm not sure what it's support is for display port options, I also had no knowledge it could be run via DP instead of HDMI.
